RCR Arquitectes: "Trusting quality public urban spaces leads to a more cohesive society"

- The 2017 Pritzker Prize gives an overview of the studio’s 25 years of existence with the exhibition "Creatividad compartida" (Shared Creativity) and a conference by Rafael Aranda.
The I International Basque Country Architecture Biennial, "MUGAK", hosts an official ceremony to present the Pritzker 2017 Award to the Catalan studio RCR Arquitectes. And it does so with a dual proposal: the exhibition ‘Creatividad compartida’ (Shared Creativity), opening on the 6th of November at the Miramar Palace, and the opening conference hosted by Rafael Aranda, one of the three partners of the studio, scheduled for the day after.
The opening of the exhibition will coincide with the official opening of the Biennial, which will be chaired by the Lehendakari (President of the Basque regional government) and will also have the presence of Rafael Aranda, who will personally guide the authorities in the first visit.
With "Creatividad Compartida" (Shared Creativity), the Catalan studio wants to "present what we call 'Universe of the shared creativity', our endeavour in the world of architecture". It will remain open until the 31st of January and it shows more than 25 years of experience of RCR Arquitectes, showing the evolution of its creative process, from the watercolours that, since the beginning of its professional practice, collected the first ideas and concepts of its projects, to the physical result of those ideas in its constructed works.
Rafael Aranda will also be in charge of giving MUGAK’s opening conference, on Tuesday the 7th of November from 11.30 am at the Miramar Palace. RCR Arquitectes welcomes its participation in the Basque Country Biennial with great interest on MUGAK’s "energy focused on bringing architecture closer to society". "Architecture, which defines our inhabiting spaces, has great influence on life and people. Helping people be aware of this is of great interest to us. With that same intention we created four years ago the foundation RCR BUNKA", they stated.
The Catalan studio also believes that architecture can be a mean to achieve more balanced cities "if they are thought of from an approach of the public space value". In this sense, they add that "trusting quality public urban spaces gives one more level to people's relationships and leads to a more cohered society. Thus, it is necessary to think about the creation of connecting projects at all levels, the understanding of the environment and how it can be modified in favour of quality spaces from the public to the private arena and vice versa, in an involving and integrating flow, where vacuum and nature, in its broadest sense, are present."
